Those who turn to gift donations, charitable birthday parties or non-profit wedding registries claim a profound sense of fulfillment that they don't get from giving or receiving traditional gifts. They emphasize that less really is more for them.
When Simon Nicholson and his wife, Anne-Claire Hervy, planned their nuptials, they decided to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity on their South African honeymoon and asked friends and family to donate to the cause instead of buying traditional wedding presents.
Although some of their friends and relatives initially struggled with not giving gifts, the response was "overwhelmingly positive," says Nicholson, an assistant professor at American University 's School of International Service in Washington, D.C.
