Hocking Hills' secluded Glenlaurel is a romantic's retreat

If you arrive at Glenlaurel a bit of a skeptic, you may leave thinking of yourself as a dreamer and true romantic.
This adults-only retreat in southeast Ohio's Hocking Hills region gets to you: the sound of rushing water as you walk the wooded paths or the discovery of the unexpected, like a swing for two near a waterfall.
It's all about the quiet in this secluded setting, where television is noticeably absent from the intimate accommodations.
Over tea in the stone-and-stucco Manor House, innkeeper Michael Daniels shared his philosophy for Glenlaurel: "It's all about creating magical moments."
Among those magical moments: when Daniels reads the poetry of Scotland's favorite son, Robert Burns, to guests before dinner; and on Saturday evenings, when a bagpiper in full kilt dress pipes you to dinner.
To achieve the sense of Brigadoon in southeast Ohio, Daniels looked to his Scottish and Welsh ancestry when he developed the inn in 1994. The Scottish theme is reflected in the names of the cottages, crofts (smaller version of cottage), suites and guestrooms in the Manor House and Carriage House. Your cottage may carry the name of Macintosh, MacTavish, Muir or you might stay in the Elliot or Sinclair croft.
