A heart for ministry
Retiring church secretary Mary Taylor will miss the word puzzles but not the paper jams.
“There were no paper jams in the good old days with manual copiers,” she said. “And I’ve never liked telephones. When I first began in 1941, telephones were nearly unheard of. Now, we have them everywhere, but I enjoy working with people, not telephones.”
Taylor, the secretary at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Albertville and creator of the word find puzzles in the church bulletin each Sunday, is retiring after 22 years of service to the church.
Members will host a reception in her honor at the church’s Family Life Center at 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 or directly after the 6 p.m. worship service.
“We’d love to have anyone that’s known her over the years come,” Pastor David Martin said.
“We’ll have a money tree for Mary and her husband as a love offering for their service.”
Taylor said she has made a collection of word puzzles over the years with many different themes, such as names of church members, hymn titles, scripture and kings of the Bible.
