Finest silk, imported from D-Day
FAYETTEVILLE During World War II, with once-common goods rationed or out of reach, the fabric for Mary Smith's wedding dress fell right out of the sky.
The remnant of scarce white silk came from the reserve parachute that dropped into Normandy on June 6, 1944, with her husband-to-be.
Mary Smith wore the dress 65 years ago - on Dec. 22, 1945 - as she wed Sgt. Eugene Deibler Jr. in the living room of her parents' house near Sanford. Last month, Deibler donated the dress to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, which will display it.
Deibler, a native of Bradford, Pa., trained in Georgia, and later was assigned to a group based at Camp McCall in the North Carolina Sandhills.
Two weeks after he got there, in July 1943, Deibler and a couple of friends arranged an outing at a local lake. One friend's date persuaded a girlfriend to come along as a companion for Deibler.
The men had pooled their money to buy a $100 car, which had no air conditioning. Before the group got to Mary Smith's house to pick her up, Deibler had decided it was too hot to try to be hospitable. He told his other single friend to be the woman's date.
