Parking woes to close Main Street store
DANBURY -- The owner of a vintage clothing store on Main Street is closing the shop's doors at the end of the month.
Barbara Levitt, owner of Upscale Downtown Consignments, said that after years of battling the city over the availability of parking near the store, she's had enough.
"It's impossible to do business here," she said. "Everyone who comes into the store complains about the parking. It's unfortunate because the store is a real destination, and that's what we want downtown."
People come from far and wide, Levitt said, for the clothing and accessories available at her shop, from vintage wedding dresses to hats made during the time Danbury was considered the hat capital of the world.
But shortly after the businesswoman opened the store about four years ago, the city took away seven parking spaces in front of the establishment and put a strip of grass in its place.
Levitt offers to pay for the parking costs of customers who use the nearby garage on Library Place , she said, but still the question remains.
