Luly Yang's annual couture show, "Ocean," was an incredible voyage under the sea
I was fortunate to attend Luly Yang 's annual couture show at the Seattle Aquarium last Friday night. And what a show it was, attended by a well-heeled and generous crowd of admirers, who showed their support of Seattle’s Children’s Hospital to the tune of over $28,000 in donations to the uncompensated care fund and pediatric research.
2010 marks Yang’s 10th year in business as a designer for her eponymous store and couture collection of gowns, cocktail dresses and even an occasional men’s suit or two. Her inspiration for this year’s show (named "Ocean") was, you guessed it, the ocean, with designs reflecting the briny deep in undulating chiffon, dark and moody sequined scales, gauzy overlays and the riotous reds and oranges of the coral reef.
The night began with a set featuring five small patients of Children’s, all looking gorgeous, proud and triumphant in their outfits, co-designed with Yang. A very poised 14-year-old Josey Tomlinson, who travels from Alaska for treatment for severe arthritis, acted as spokeswoman for the young models and was dressed in a sapphire-blue pleated gown that will no doubt double as a homecoming dress that garners the envy of her peers.
