Extravaganza brings prom dresses to girls
COLUMBUS — Prom can be a pricey occasion.
Sometimes it is too costly for families who are struggling to make ends meet. When choosing between paying a heating bill or purchasing a dress for their daughter to wear to the dance, the bill usually wins out.
But thanks to the Closet Extravaganza, dozens of high school girls have been able to get a free dress plus accessories to wear to their school’s prom.
The event began six years ago and has since been held every other year. It is organized by Jean Kamrath, a nurse at Columbus High School.
We started doing this because of the poverty rate in this area, Kamrath said.
She sees many students each day who are living in poverty and didn’t want them to miss out on prom just because they couldn’t afford to buy a dress.
The need for the event is evident in the popularity it has gained. During the first year it was held, 60 girls took advantage of the Extravaganza. Two years ago, the last time it was held, 180 girls came to look through the 400 donated dresses. Students who have come to the event are from local and area schools including St. Edward, Rising City, David City, Shelby, Leigh and Humphrey.
Opinions on short prom dresses as opposed to the traditional long ones?
I found this really cute prom dress that I'm planning to get for my formal but it's pretty short, above the knees for the model. As I'm short (5'2) this would be below or on my knees.

I wore a short dress to my prom, definitely above knee, but it didn't look tacky because it didn't have a low neck and was more of a shift dress.
I think most people who wore short dresses looked better, as many of the long dresses were some sort
