MOBILE, Ala. — When Albernita “Punnie” Straub married Joseph Lee Bosarge on Jan. 30, 1960, she came home from her honeymoon and took her beautiful white tulle handmade wedding gown to Gayfers to have it vacuum-packed to preserve it.
She stored it away in the attic for the next 50 years, never dreaming that one day, her granddaughter would see photos of her as a bride, smilingly posed before a fireplace with a bouquet of white roses at her waist, and say, “Meme, I want to get married in your wedding dress.”
But that’s exactly what happened.
And on Jan. 29, one day short of Punnie and Joe Bosarge’s 51st wedding anniversary, Ashton Rel will walk down the aisle at St. Joseph’s Chapel at Spring Hill College to meet her future husband, just as her grandmother did more than five decades ago.
She’ll be wearing the same dress, with only a small adjustment around the neckline to modernize it a bit.
As Ashton, 24, tells the story, she believes that when her grandmother stored the gown, she secretly hoped that if she had a daughter some day, she’d choose to wear the dress at her wedding.
