I love lace, it’s absolutely beautiful unless it’s overdone and I understand your concern. You can go ‘retro’, which is absolutely gorgeous, yet you may consider a simple veil which won’t fight for attention with your face (of course), and your beautiful dress. “Retro” doesn’t always mean “best”, and as our styles evolve, we learn from past mistakes, so to speak.

Sempliner’s is spotlighting many of these styles at its fifth annual prom fashion show from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the State Theatre, 913 Washington Ave. During the free event, local high-school students model the newest and most popular prom styles. Hairstylists, makeup artists and tuxedo experts help highlight this year’s fashions.
A big innovation in prom dresses this year is a lace-up back that can be tied to tighten the bodice, similar to what is traditionally found on wedding dresses. This “makes it easier for the girls to adjust the bodice” for a better fit, Grant said.
Almost anything goes when it comes to bodices, including sequins, bows, jewels, beads, appliqué, feathers, brocade and rhinestones.
“It’s all about the bling ... it’s almost costume-like,” Grant said. “When else — except for prom — would you get to dress like this?”
Dress skirts range from the traditional straight fit to flowing, swirling chiffon or cascading layers of ruffles, tulle or floral rosettes. One of the hottest sellers at the Deb shop in the Bay City Mall has been the “tulip” dress, said assistant store manager Meaghan Lockhart. The knee-length dress features a slim-fit waist with a full crinoline skirt.
