Salinas-area couturier Ericka Engelman creates custom-made wedding dresses
CARMEL The job, the work she does, feels like a perfect fit.
"I can't imagine doing anything different," Ericka Engelman said. "It's just such happy work."
Engelman stood amid bolts of soft-colored fabrics. Mannequins, attired in wedding dresses in various states of pearly completion, awaited her attention.
For 27 years, she has designed, customized and tailored wedding gowns.
While she and her husband, John, live in a house on the outskirts of Salinas, her 3,000-square-foot salon, "ericka engelman couture," sits at 133 Crossroads Blvd. in Carmel.
That's up a cobblestone side street behind Rio Grill in the Crossroads Shopping Center. The salon's name is in white on a turquoise-colored awning.
"First thing I do is to ask a client to bring me pictures of things she likes," Engelman said.
Could be fabrics, colors, designs, anything. Engelman uses those images to launch a process that ends with a custom-made wedding gown.
"We want the bride to wear the dress we make, not the dress to wear the bride," she said. "We want that dress in the supporting role."
