Q: My fiance and I are considering a destination wedding in Italy. What do we have to pay for? And if we're afraid someone won't be able to afford the trip, is it better to invite them or not? I don't want anyone to feel bad they can't pay for flights and a long weekend in a hotel, but I also don't want them to feel insulted that we didn't invite them, either. And furthermore, I don't want it to look like we're fishing for presents from people we know can't attend. Help!
A: You need to cover the costs of all wedding-related events -- your guests shouldn't have to pay for anything you invite them to. So the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception, any sort of post-wedding brunch, etc., are all your responsibility. If you can afford to cover hotel and/or airfare for your guests as well, that's fantastic, but you're not expected to.
If you really, truly would be happy if someone came to Italy with you, you should invite them -- whether or not you think they can afford it. You just have to be sure you don't make anyone feel you're pressuring them to attend. Maybe you could send an e-mail around the time the invitations go out saying something like, "Not sure if you've received the invitation to our wedding yet, but I just wanted to say that I know it's not the easiest thing in the world to drop everything and join us in Italy. If you can't make it, I completely understand."
